Fresh reports have claimed Newcastle are considering a move for De Gea after Nick setback was confirmed
Newcastle United supporters are divided about whether Eddie Howe should sign David de Gea. A rotten run of injury luck continued on Saturday when Nick Pope hobbled off against Manchester United with a shoulder problem.
While at Burnley, the goalkeeper missed the entire 2018-19 Premier League campaign with the same injury. Newcastle fear they will lose their number one for at least five months – meaning Pope would not return until the end of the season.
The Magpies are still fighting on all four fronts and face a crippling December fixture list, with Champions League and Carabao Cup fixtures placing added pressure on Howe’s already-depleted squad. Martin Dubravka, Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie are in reserve but the Daily Mail claim Newcastle could pounce for De Gea.
The former Red Devils goalie has been without a club since the summer despite earning the Premier League’s Golden Glove award last season. Interest from Saudi Arabia was reported but De Gea believes he can still compete at the highest level.
A controversial situation saw Man United boss Erik ten Hag U-turn on a decision to give the Spaniard, still just 33, a new contract. Reports suggesting a Toon move could be on the cards have been met with a mixed reaction from supporters.
“I doubt this will happen,” one social media user posted. “We have Dubravka plus two more keepers on the books with high wages who just sit on the bench. Why would we add another when Dubravka is more than capable? We need a striker and depth in midfield.”
Another fan was more receptive, highlighting De Gea’s record last year and Nick Pope’s own deficiencies with his feet. The comment on X, formerly Twitter, read: “If he can agree to the wage structure of Newcastle United, why not? De Gea was the best goalkeeper in the league last season. (Man) United let him go because they want someone who can pass out from the back. Nick Pope and De Gea are good shot stoppers.”
