Afeezee Unveils His New EP African Magic Vol. 1: A Journey Through the Roots of African Music

In this exclusive chat with Rauf Jamal Eniola, Afeezee shares what inspired the EP, how he blends old-school African vibes with modern beats, and how his years in the music scene have shaped this project. What is behind the name of your ep “AFRICAN magic”?

The name African Magic Vol. 1 is not far-fetched. It stemmed from the theme of the album. I wanted to explore various African sounds and go deeper into the roots of African music.

A source disclose that you have over 9 years experience in music writing, how much as this influence this project?

Yes, they are right. My experience in writing music played a key role in the formulation and composition of this EP. It’s easier more than ever to come up with content for my music. I started writing music in 2015 and I have numerous unreleased tracks. The experiences gained over the years have improved my pen-game.

Where there any challenges in making this EP?

There were no serious challenge while making this EP. I had written, recorded and completed this EP a year ago. It has been in my archive ever since because I had a project I wanted to release before this, that is my previous EP, the 2024: Pick your gems EP.

How does this EP differ from your previous work?

This EP is different from my previous projects based on its technicalities. It is more focused on African music roots. From the instrumentals, to the lyrics and the structure of the songs, all taking listeners on a journey through Africa.

Which track on the EP is your favorite and why?

I love all the tracks on the EP. It is hard to choose a favourite when you know all the songs there are top-notch, which are not only entertaining but inspiring. But I think, the track “Sunrise” has this ethereal effect on me when I listen.

You studied computer science in school or perhaps you are still an undergraduate, how have you been able to merge this course and making good music?

Yes, I am a graduate of computer science and I’m also currently on my Masters degree in Computer Science at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ife.
You will definitely find time for what you love. I enjoy creating things, not just music. So, I devote time to it. Merging academics with music can be demanding at times but I find my way through and I’m enjoying both activities.

Do you think your fans will be surprised by the this EP in any way?

My fans know me for creating innovative sounds, many of them won’t be surprised seeing the new dimension I took my music to. For them, it’s just another day in office for Afeezee.

Who are the producers you worked with while making this project?

I worked with two producers in this project. Sofra (Sound From Africa) from Kenya and Amon Chiredzian Sweetness from Zimbabwe. Sofra is known for creating amazing African tunes and Amon is a dancehall artiste/producer from Zimbabwe.

Do you think this project will have a positive influence on you?

This project sets me on a new path that I would like to walk for a long time. It’s a path to a new genre called Afroroots, a genre of music connecting Africans to their roots. It will have an immense influence on my career going forward.

What’s the overall vibe or genre of the EP?

The genre is Afroroots, connecting Africans to the music of their roots. It gives a blend of traditional and modern vibes with various instruments, percussions and apt lyrics to go with it.

What’s the strangest piece of advice you received when making this EP?

All the advice I get has an element of truth and usefulness in them. So I didn’t get any strange advice while making this EP.

Should we be expecting any visual content?

There will definitely be visual content for the EP. Depending on my fans demand, I should be able to do a few visuals for the EP.

What your review about the music industry so far?

Nigerian music industry has grown to be a global delight reaching and influencing various people across the globe. The Nigerian music now has a global appeal which all artistes should capitalize on.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans who have been supporting you and loving this new song?

To my fans who have been supporting me since day one and to those who came after, I really want to appreciate your love and support for my brand. I promise I won’t disappoint you. The kind of vibes you know me for and more would be delivered in my upcoming projects. I promise you would be entertained and inspired more than ever before.
